Q&A with Jake Lodwick Creator of Pummelvision!

Ever wished you could rewind your entire life and watch it again?

You can. Two clicks, and Pummelvision grabs every photo long buried in your Flickr, Facebook, or Tumblr, and gives you a breathtakingly beautiful, painfully poignant, and utterly simple video summary of your life.

It’s remarkable, so much so 5,000 people made their own in just the first week. (Make one, and reply with your link! We wanna see!)

We chatted with Jake Lodwick, co-founder of Vimeo and creator of Pummelvision and got some pretty great insights into how Pummelvision came to be and where it’s going.

Also, check out today’s blurb on Pummelvision

Q: Every video is set to the same song. It’s somehow magically fitting for every Pummel video. What’s the story behind it?

A: I worked with two of the guys from the 8-bit band Anamanaguchi to make a track at the precise same rate as the photos fly by.

We went through a lot of iterations to get it just right, I needed something that was a little bit emotional, not too distracting, at the perfect speed, and so on. (The musicians’ site is here btw: http://nateandary.muxtape.com).

Q: The simplicity is pretty fun right now - it kind of does exactly what the name indicates - pummels you with a flash of your life in photographs.

A: The original name was “tumblgasm.” The first one I made was for my Tumblr images only, so I thought it was a good name.

Q: Oh yeah! We heard this all came about when you saved all your Tumblr images after deleting your Tumblr account. Do tell.

A: I had already killed my Tumblr account and all the images were sitting on my computer…when the idea came to me.

I made the video in Final Cut and went crazy watching it, and thought, “I have to make a site that does this for everyone else!” [You can watch his reaction video here http://vimeo.com/17532221]

Q: Is there a user element to Pummelvision yet? People are addicted and are itching to make more Pummelvision videos!

A: There’s no user element right now. I wanted to make it really easy for people to get going. But it’s quickly become apparent that people want to make multiple videos.

We’ll get more flexible as time goes on. The #1 most requested feature is to be able to use specific albums instead of grabbing every photo from your account.

For now, you can go to http://pummelvision.com/?restart after your first video is setup and make another.

But in the future, you’ll have the option of making an account and setting up multiple videos, I think.

Q: Yay! We can’t wait. So what kind of new stuff might we see on Pummelvision?

A: I plan to add more features to give useres control over which photos are included, which music plays, the speed, and so on. Also, I plan to keep adding services: Picasa, Twitpic, Dropbox, and so on.
